This note may be read independently, but it is partly a response
to discussion in BBOARD@SAIL.
Our facilities are pretty good now. Improvements should be
divided into those that require hardware and software that are now for
sale and those that require items not yet on the market whose pace
we can't much affect.
Replacing the main SAIL and SCORE computers with a single faster
computer with good software is in the latter category. We know the DEC
2080 is being developed, and if it were the only suitable computer
available when it is announced, it would probably justify replacing our
present hardware. A super-VAX might justify it, but that is less certain.
I have no special desire to preserve the SAIL operating system
as such. There are differences of opinion on whether it is better than
TOPS-20, but it seems to me that it is certainly not enough better
to justify keeping a non-commercial system. The situation was quite
